Canaryist

Read part one of a two-part interview we did with Phillyist.com this week. Thanks to Jillian Ashley Blair Ivey and Phillyist for thinking we’re interesting enough for two installments! The second half will run on Friday. Read it here.

A John Dorian Christmas, or, You’re a Good Man, JD

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

I’m not sure how this could be much better. Take one of my favorite shows, Scrubs, and mix it with one of my favorite Christmas specials, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and you get this awesome 10-minute video with Zach Braff as Charlie Brown. Enjoy!

December Wing Tips

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

In lieu of a December newsletter, we’ve decided to post this month’s tips on Birdfeed. Here are a few news items and tips you may find useful this month. We pass along the info, but you should be sure to research all contests before you enter!

  • The National Endowment for the Arts and Theatre Communications Group announce the 2007 deadlines for the NEA/TCG Career Development Programs for Theatre Directors and Designers. www.tcg.org
  • The Future of Music Coaltion has released a new study that shows radio ownership consolidation at the national and local levels has led to fewer choices in radio programming and harmed the listening public and those working in the music and media industries, including DJs, programmers and musicians. Read the report at futureofmusic.org.
  • FMC’s sixth annual Policy Summit is also fully archived on their site. 120 panelists debated the issues that are emerging as music promotion and distribution moves to a global, digital platform. Webcasts are now online.

I received very sad news this week. Musician and producer J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines, Channels) and his wife Janet learned in September that their son Cal was born with a genetic motor neuron disease called Type 1 SMA, or Spinal Muscular Atrophy. The survival rate for Type 1 is low, and those who survive are confined to a wheelchair. There is currently no cure, but there are treatments that insurance probably won’t cover. Kim Coletta and Bill Barbot of DeSoto Records have set up a web page where you can learn more about this condition and make a donation to help J. and Janet manage their growing medical bills. I’m sure many of you reading this are, like us at Canary, fans of J.’s music and you’ve probably bought many records that he’s produced or engineered over the years.  Personally, J. and the folks at DeSoto have influenced us imeasurably, both as musicians and as business owners.  Kim was one of the first people to offer her advice when we started a record label and released our first record.  J. and DeSoto have always been very supportive of younger artists working their way up, and that’s a rare thing in this industry.  Please visit the website and donate what you can.

GregCoy_Glynn_CN8_1.jpgI’ve had the pleasure of escorting Mr. Glynn Turman around Philadelphia as he’s been in town for his role in The Wilma Theater’s My Children! My Africa!, which begins previews tonight and opens on Dec. 13th.  Mr. Turman is well known for his many TV, film and theater credits, which include HBO’s The Wire, A Different World (remember that show?), and the cult classic Cooley High.  You can read a feature with him in the Dec. 5th edition of the Philadelphia Tribune.
Yesterday, we hit the Lowes Hotel for a live interview on CN8’s Your Morning.  Everyone wanted to get photos with Glynn (pictured here are host Greg Coy and Glynn).  And since I was there as his PR rep, I collected a lot of cards - from the professional stylist there to talk about winter fashions for men (apparently color is in), head shots from one of the models, and even an offer from a policeman who said “give me a call if you ever need to get somewhere in a hurry.”  So THAT’s where my tax dollars are going!

Will It Blend?

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

This is about the most brilliant bit of marketing on the web right now. Have you ever wanted to eat an entire Thanksgiving meal complete with turkey and cranberry sauce as a smoothy? Or how about a bottle of beer including the glass bottle? Or some golf balls? Or a rake handle?

It’s not just that they’re showcasing a very powerful blender. It’s that they’ve struck the perfect style note in doing so. It’s hip and geeky without detracting from the obvious merits of the product. I can’t. Stop. Watching.
