I received very sad news this week. Musician and producer J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines, Channels) and his wife Janet learned in September that their son Cal was born with a genetic motor neuron disease called Type 1 SMA, or Spinal Muscular Atrophy. The survival rate for Type 1 is low, and those who survive are confined to a wheelchair. There is currently no cure, but there are treatments that insurance probably won’t cover. Kim Coletta and Bill Barbot of DeSoto Records have set up a web page where you can learn more about this condition and make a donation to help J. and Janet manage their growing medical bills. I’m sure many of you reading this are, like us at Canary, fans of J.’s music and you’ve probably bought many records that he’s produced or engineered over the years.  Personally, J. and the folks at DeSoto have influenced us imeasurably, both as musicians and as business owners.  Kim was one of the first people to offer her advice when we started a record label and released our first record.  J. and DeSoto have always been very supportive of younger artists working their way up, and that’s a rare thing in this industry.  Please visit the website and donate what you can.
