Canary News: Fall Arts Bounty, Winning at the Geek Awards, Social Media Tips
While most of us lament trading in beach chairs for cozy sweaters, here at Canary we’re elated to feel that autumn nip in the air — because it means the city’s embarking on a fresh season of groundbreaking theater, thought-provoking exhibitions and thrilling dance performances. Besides, we’re kinda too busy to notice…
Recognition & Awards
We think Canary’s clients are the best of the best — and all the awards they’ve been winning lately confirm that it’s not just our opinion. The Association for Public Art’s Open Air was named one of the 50 Best Public Arts Projects of 2013 by the Americans for the Arts’ Public Art Network, and Event of the Year at the Philadelphia Geek Awards.

The Mural and the Mint’s soundwalk The Empty Air, also nominated for a Geek Award, won Best App from Best of Philly (look for Animina, a new Philadelphia soundwalk from musician Mike Kiley, this fall).
Philadelphia Weekly’s roundup of the best theater of 2012-2013 heaped praise on the Lantern Theater Company, noting its production of Heroes and namingThe Beauty Queen of Leenane the best play production of the season.
Sometimes at Canary it’s hard to believe all this started in a tour van (really), but this profile of founder Megan Wendell that appeared in both Flying Kite and Keystone Edge reminds us exactly where we’ve come from, and hints at where we’re going.

Canary staffer Rachel Olenick’s two-part blog post, 6 Ways Twitter Can Help Sell Tickets, was featured in Thomas Cott’s email You’ve Cott Mail, one of our favorite daily reads (and distributed to over 10,000 arts professionals).
In-house social media strategist Rose Mineo gets into the picture with a blog post on how Instagram brings audiences into the moment, and Megan was re-inspired by the power of storytelling at the Americans for the Arts Conference in Pittsburgh.

There’s no summer slowdown for Canary clients, who continued to make cool headlines in a hot season.

If it’s September, it must be time for the Fringe Festival presented by FringeArts. Now in its 17th year, the organization has a new name, a soon-to-be-opened new home, and a new season of international artists, homegrown talent and neighborhood shows. As usual, you’ll find the festival in nearly every media outlet you pick up or tune in to, including 6abc, WHYY, KYW Newsradio, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia City Paper, Metro Philadelphia and hundreds more.

Crowdfunding, gender-bending and fantastic costumes propelled some great stories about Mauckingbird Theatre’s production of The Importance of Being Earnest, and puppet puns were a gift to headline writers as the Puppet Festival (r)Evolution garnered regional cover stories and national press including an Associated Press feature.
The Philadelphia Inquirer ran a front-page A&E story on Philadelphia Young Playwrights’ Paula Vogel Mentors Project, honoring the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and teacher. The program brings together five acclaimed professional playwrights as mentors for give promising young playwright fellows.
