Cultural Moments of 2012: Megan's Picks
This week, we’re rounding up our favorite Philadelphia cultural moments of 2012. Today, Canary Promotion President and Founder Megan Wendell remembers a year of bright lights, big ideas and introductions to Broadway. (Don’t forget to read Carolyn and Rose’s picks from earlier this week, too.)
Open Air
Commissioned by the Association for Public Art and created by Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Open Air was a remarkable combination of public art, mobile technology and the voices of thousands. It was an unforgettable experience – from the opening night on the Ben Franklin Parkway with the artist, legendary beatboxer Rahzel and a crowd of thousands, to sitting on a blanket with my family watching the night sky light up and listening to messages from all sorts of Philadelphians and visitors. I even left my own message to control the 24 robotic searchlights. I was proud to be a part of a project in which so many people participated and that, for a month, transformed a part of Philadelphia.
National Arts Marketing Project Conference
This past November, I spent a weekend in Charlotte, NC (thanks for the lovely weather, Charlotte) to geek out with thousands of arts administrators, marketers and artists. We had passionate discussions about the future of arts and culture and how to connect with audiences and keep them engaged. I attended panel discussions on consumer psychology, foundational arts giving, cultural stereotypes in marketing, and audience engagement, among others. Another highlight was a visit to Charlotte’s Mint Museum (pictured above). This year’s NAMPC will be held Nov. 8 – 11 in Portland.
Taking my daughter to her first Broadway show
Growing up in Maine as an arts nerd, the stages of Broadway were always a far-off dream of mine. It wasn’t until college that I’d set foot in a Broadway theater. In December I got to share that amazing experience with my daughter. At the tender age of 5, she’s already a pro in a theater or a gallery, and she was captivated by The Lion King from beginning to end. It’s truly a thrill as a parent to be able to expose her to such a wide variety of cultural experiences – one of the many reasons I love living in the Greater Philadelphia region and being close to NYC!
There are far too many memorable moments from 2012 to include in this post! But here’s a list of some other favorites:
· Celebrating our forward-thinking arts community at the Knight Arts Challenge awards ceremony
· Seeing Lucidity Suitcase Intercontinental’s Red-Eye to Havre de Grace– twice
· The amazing Wim Wenders dance film Pina
· Post-show chats over potluck dinners at This Town Is a Mystery
· Cage and Cunningham dancers at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Bowerbird’s Cage: Beyond Silence festival
· Seeing the installation of Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing #972 at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery
· Attending the Pennsylvania Conference for Women
· Celebrating the theater community at Theatre Philadelphia: A Celebration
