Fringe Fest Sideshow: Opportunity for Philly Fringe Artists & Fans
If you want to get an early sneak preview of what’s happening in this year’s Philadelphia Live Arts Festival & Philly Fringe, or if you’re an artist who wants to workshop some new material, make sure you head to National Mechanics (22 S. 3rd St. in Old City on Monday, June 28 for “The Fringe Fest Sideshow.”
The first night of a three-part series, this is a FREE event open to any artists or festival fans 21 and up. Here’s what the organizers say you can do with this opportunity:
*Present works in progress & test out select pieces of your work with your friends watching!
*Promote your up-coming works!
*Read a monologue!
*Do a dance!
*Enact a scene!
*Show clips of your multimedia work!
*Sing songs from your show!
*Treat it as sorta being an open mic open to everyone Fringe!
*Have mega cheap drinks and good food!
Check out the Facebook event invite for full details.

Designing in the Browser
Mason: What started as an experiment, seeing how far I could take a design without Photoshop, has now turned into my defacto workflow. First I just thought I was saving myself a lot of time and becoming a better coder in the process. But I’m also now reaping the benefits of presenting html-based mockups to clients. By evaluating the website, rather than a picture of a website the client and I are working together much more closely than we have in the past and coming up with some exciting things.
I talked about this recently at Drupaldelphia and at Design for Drupal in Boston. Check out the slides from my presentation here.

Gender-bending in the theater
What impact can gender swapping can have on a recognizable narrative? As two of our clients prepare to take well-known stories to the stage, we’re looking at how playing with gender can bring new light to stories and characters we thought we knew so well. Brat Productions’ take on Carrie, slated for Halloween 2010, will feature the iconic telekinetic misfit in drag for a blood-drenched comic horror thrill ride based on the 1974 Stephen King novel. Mauckingbird Theatre Company’s summer production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream switches the gender of multiple characters, adding a queer aesthetic, for a twist representing modern love.

Seeing public art in new ways
Have you ever wondered how a sculpture ended up where it is, who created it, or what it means? We’re thinking about the ways in which people experience public art and the artworks’ untold histories as we work on a publicity campaign for the Fairmount Park Art Association’s Museum Without Walls™: AUDIO (launching in June), a multi-platform, interactive audio experience for Philadelphia’s preeminent collection of public art and outdoor sculpture.

Diving into Sass 3
The Sass team recently released a beta of Sass 3, which has tons of new features and improvements. CSS’ers will appreciate the optional CSS-like syntax, but I’m devouring all the new operations you can do with color variables. I’ve already found “transparentize” and “opacify” to be indispensable, and have also found a good use for the “mix” function which allow you to blend colors when you compile them to CSS. -Mason
