ICYMI: Getting meta on social media, and other November reading
Our Facebook and Twitter newsfeeds fell into three distinct categories in November: We found lots of stories about the arts’ positive impact on our lives; talked about social media trends on social media (how meta); and did a ton of live-blogging/tweeting/Facebooking from local and national panels and conferences.
Here’s what you might’ve missed:
Cheerleading for the Arts
We weren’t alone in posting the New York Times opinion piece “Art Makes You Smart,” all about how kids who go to museums end up with “stronger critical thinking skills, higher levels of social tolerance, greater historical empathy and a taste for art museums and cultural institutions.” In short, if you build it, they will come — and if they come, they’ll be better for it when they grow up. (Thomas Cott also took up the validity of the Field of Dreams theory in a recent blog post.)
Speaking of artsy kids, don’t miss this awe-inspiring video interview with Song ErRui, the 11-year-old daughter of Beijing-based contemporary artists Song Dong and Yin Xiuzhen (whose exhibition The Way of Chopsticks is on view at the Philadelphia Art Alliance through Dec. 29).
So what happens when kids like ErRui grow up and want to pursue art for a living? We shared this Wall Street Journal piece on how artist aren’t actually as starving as everyone thinks. They also tend to be “happier than the rest of the population.” That’s why we love having artists as clients!
The Best Place to Share News About Social Media? Social Media!
We rely on outlets like Fast Company to keep us up-to-speed on social media’s lightning-speed evolution. In Twitterland, alerts and @MagicRecs were top of mind as the company went public this fall. (Mashable is also a great source, here pointing out a company that was able to take advantage of the IPO for marketing purposes. Our hats are tipped, Banana Republic!)
A recent Pew Research Center/John S. and James L. Knight Foundation study found that while folks aren’t necessarily logging on to Facebook for their news, Facebook is still where they’re absorbing it. We also learned that the average Facebook user is 39 years old.
There seems to be a divide about whether millennials (read: twentysomethings) should manage social media accounts. Are they more intuitively clued-in, or too inexperienced? We think it’s best to just hire the right person for the job, regardless of generation. (Related reading: Philadelphia’s Millennial Revolution on PhillyMag.com.)
Oh, the Places We’ve Tweeted
The Canary staff was busy in November. Rose was part of a Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts panel discussion on crowdfunding at the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums’ annual conference (read her blog recap here).
She also attended an Al Dia-hosted panel on diversity in media, live-Tweeting great words of wisdom from Philly journalists Bobbi Booker, Elisabeth Perez-Luna and more.
Farther afield, Megan attended the National Arts Marketing Project’s annual conference, this year in Portland, Ore. She kept busy attending sessions, co-hosting roundtable discussions, soaking in the city’s cultural scene — and sharing it all on our social media accounts.
