Making Spirits Bright: Canary’s Holiday Favorites
It’s an important part of our work here at Canary to not only promote arts and culture in Philadelphia, but also to participate in it! And holiday fare is no exception. Here are our staff’s top picks for events to get you and yours into the spirit.

The Lantern Theater: A Child’s Christmas in Wales and FringeArts: Twelfth Night, or What You Will

I love the visual excitement of the holidays, especially on stage. Sebastienne Mundheim is collaborating with Lantern Theater Company on an original production of Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales. I loved listening to that poem growing up and the production photos that just came in are stunning. I can’t wait to see it in person. I also really loved Pig Iron’s Twelfth Night, or What You Will the first time around, and the whole Canary team will be seeing it at FringeArts next week. (Lantern tickets; FringeArts tickets)
The Philadelphia Orchestra: Christmas Kids Spectacular

Enjoying arts and cultural experiences together is a big part of my family’s life, so of course we make the arts part of our holiday traditions too. This year, we’re looking forward to treating my 6-year-old daughter to her first Philadelphia Orchestra experience at their Christmas Kids Spectacular. We’re also big on holiday lights, so we’ll be visiting the Macy’s light show, Franklin Square’s new Electrical Spectacle (pictured, top) and this amazing display out in Ambler.
The Waitstaff: Breaking Bad Santa

The Waitstaff sketch comedy troupe has always been a particular favorite of mine. Not only are they Fringe Festival stalwarts (the “Real Housewives of South Philadelphia” bits are especially great), but they’re constantly reinventing themselves to stay relevant (see this fall’s Robin Thicke-ified finale to The Waitstaff Happy Hour). I can’t wait to laugh till it hurts at Breaking Bad Santa, on stage at L’Etage through Dec. 21.
Woodmere Art Museum:
“A Christmas Past in the Pennsylvania German Tradition”

This year, Woodmere Art Museum is saving me an international flight by channeling Rothenberg’s Deutsches Weihnachtsmuseum (German Christmas Museum). When I’m looking for a family alternative to The Nutcracker, I’ll be at Woodmere’s “A Christmas Past” exhibition with its gallery filled with wonderful toy trains, wooden toys, puzzles and dolls.

Chestnut Hill Meetinghouse: James Turrell Skyspace
(Recommended by Carise Mitch)
I’m pretty nondenominational in my personal spirituality, but I always seek out transcendent moments in the holiday season. This year I think I’ll find that moment by returning to the James Turrell Skyspace at the new Chestnut Hill Friends Meetinghouse. At sunset or sunrise on Sundays and Tuesdays (weather permitting), it’s 50 minutes of a beautiful, communal experience of light and peace through a very special work of art.
