Our Favorite Cultural Moments of 2010: Megans' Picks
Canary Promotion founder & president, Megan Wendell shares some favorite experiences from the past year. Some are Canary clients; some are not. How lucky are we to work with clients who consistently make such inspiring work that we can’t stop talking about it a year later?
Nichole Canuso Dance Company’s TAKES at the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival: While I loved this piece for its inventive blend of dance, video installation, sound and music, what made it truly special was the intimate mood created by performers Nichole Canuso and Dito Van Reigersberg. As they performed inside a box of transparent screens, we felt a bit like voyeurs of a relationship but also that we were experiencing something familiar – those lazy Sunday mornings you’ve spent with your significant other, just being together. Music by Mike Kiley was the perfect accompaniment and an artistic achievement all its own.

Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia launch event: We were thrilled when Knight Foundation approached us to work with them on the launch of the Knight Arts Challenge in Philadelphia. Being an ambassador for a program that will bring $9 million over three years to the arts and culture community that I love was a job I took on with great enthusiasm. As a professional accomplishment, it was particularly gratify to have our launch even come together so successfully and to see a room full of over 200 community members abuzz with ideas for the challenge.

Uncle Vanya at Lantern Theater Company: I loved this production so much that I just had to see it twice. The Lantern is one of our newer theater clients, but I’ve admired their work for some time. And they really started their season with an undeniably affecting opener. The ensemble acting was some of the best I’ve seen on any stage, and it gave me a new appreciation and understanding of Chekhov’s work. (On a sad note, actress Melissa Lynch who gave a stunning performance as Sonya passed away last month – a terrible loss for the community. You can read about her here.)

Yo Gabba Gabba Live!: Ok, I don’t know if watching people dance around in Muno and Foofa costumes completely counts as a cultural experience, but there was lots of music! My husband and I took our 3-year-old daughter to the Yo Gabba Gabba! show at the Mann Center as a birthday present. I’m not sure who enjoyed it more – her or us – but as DJ Lance Rock says, “Listening and dancing to music is awesome!”
