Sometimes these Canaries need their creative-beauty sleep
Everyone at Canary is, by nature, extremely passionate about our work and hyper-engaged in the cultural community. It’s not that we’re workaholics (ok, maybe a little bit). It’s more that we are so dedicated to our work that sometimes it’s hard to “call it a day,” to remember that we need to step back, take a break, and unwind - not just from time to time, but every day, so that we can continue to deliver a constant stream of quality creative communications.
Arrianna Huffington recently made an excellent point at her TEDWomen talk How to Succeed? Get more sleep where she suggested women should start “sleeping their way to the top, literally.” We are all extremely busy people, and often it seems there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done, but that shouldn’t lead to stealing those hours from our own health and well-being. In reality, sleeping less doesn’t make you a better person, and it certainly doesn’t make you better at what you do. In fact, quite the opposite – less sleep greatly reduces productivity, and has a serious impact on the quality of work produced.
We are not robots, and that’s a good thing, because it’s what makes our work so effective. We need to stop working like robots, because things like sleep and food and playtime are what allow us to become inspired, stay healthy and continue to do creative work that gets our clients noticed.
Canary recently implemented a “winter break” for the week between Christmas and New Years, and when we came back we all talked about our exciting week of sleeping, hanging out and generally relaxing with friends and family, and agreed that it was the best break ever. As a result, we are going to continue to be communications rock stars for all of our clients, we’re going to get a little more sleep and spend a little less time in the office, especially late at night. We also promise to never become Canary-bots, or any less passionate about what we do.
