Girls Rock Philly Announces
’08 Camp Week; August 4-9
Now Accepting Camper & Volunteer Applications for Philly’s Only Girls Rock ‘n’ Roll Summer Camp

Girls Rock Philly returns for its second summer of teaching girls how to rock out from August 4 – 9, 2008. A non-profit organization presenting Philadelphia’s only rock camp for girls, Girls Rock Philly (GRP) is now accepting camper and volunteer applications for the 2008 summer camp session. The week-long summer day camp for junior rockers ages 9 to 17 is held on the campus of Girard College (at Girard Ave. & Corinthian Ave.) in Philadelphia. For more information and to submit an application, visit www.girlsrockphilly.org or call (215) 789-4879.

GRP’s inaugural camp week, held last August, was a resounding success as 20 campers from all parts of the city and suburbs learned to play instruments, wrote their own songs, formed 5 bands and performed on stage at the end of the week. The camp even fostered a new band known as Oak Oak Okay who have continued to perform around the city. GRP also provided scholarships & partial assistance for 50% of campers in need of financial assistance.

GRP Director Beth Warshaw-Duncan says, “Our first camp week was a tremendous success and many of our campers are returning for 2008. The Girls Rock Camp Alliance has 14 sister camps serving over 1500 girls this summer, and we’re proud to be part of a movement that has clearly struck a chord.”

GRP provides girls with opportunities to learn guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, DJ’ing and vocals. No musical experience is necessary and all equipment and instruments are provided. Campers form bands and write their own songs over the course of a week, allowing the aspiring young musicians a space in which to figure out what and how they want to play, while working in a team setting.

The female-only environment, a rarity in the music world, provides both campers and volunteers with a comfortable atmosphere, emphasizing artistic independence and creative ownership, including copyright to their own songs. The camp also features guided band practice, special guest performers, and diverse workshops including the history of women in music, non-traditional instruments, sound and recording, and band art where participants have the opportunity to create original t-shirts and buttons. The program culminates in an end of camp showcase, open to the public, this year to be held on Saturday, August 9. Performance details will be announced soon.

GRP is currently accepting camper applications and is seeking dedicated volunteers and camp counselors. No prior musical experience is required to be a camper or a volunteer, although some experience is required to be a band instructor. Tuition is $400, and financial assistance and full scholarships are available to those in need. Applications must be postmarked by June 15th.

Press

"The raw, slamming sounds of girl Band A reverberate liked trapped thunder against white cinder-block walls. Standing in a circle - rock-and-roll poses perfected, little-kid smiles wiped away - each girl adds her personal noise to the collective din, now growing loud enough to kill small animals. At Girls Rock Philly day camp at Girard College...you don't ask if it's good. The questions are: Is it awesome? and Does it rock?"
