Canary News

March 2010

Even though we’ve been buried in snow here in Philadelphia, we’ve managed to keep ourselves pretty busy this winter.  Really, what’s more cozy than launching a new website or PR campaign while sitting by the fire and drinking tea? Check out what we’ve been working on.

Design

The Canary design team has been on fire lately with a slew of new website launches. Here are a few highlights.

The Rosenbach Museum & Library: We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the new Rosenbach Museum & Library site.  Also a promotion client for the last three years, the Rosenbach presents incredibly creative and thought-provoking exhibitions and programs, based on their amazing collection of rare books, manuscripts, furniture and art, including the original work of renowned author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, for which the Rosenbach is the sole repository.  Their new site encourages visitors to delve into their collections while highlighting the museum’s exhibitions, tours and special programs.  Managing and updating this large amount of content is made easy through our Drupal content management system.

The Wilma Theater: We’ve been working with the award-winning Wilma Theater, located on the Avenue of the Arts in Philadelphia, as a PR client for five seasons!  So we were excited to develop a new site for them, in collaboration with the theater’s graphic designer.  Canary handled the functionality of the site and created the content management system, which allows staff to make updates quickly and easily – from adding new production videos, to promoting special events, to posting the latest play reviews.

Nichole Canuso Dance Company:  We’ve always loved Nichole Canuso’s work as a dance artist and performer and her ability to create what she describes as “dances that celebrate the awkwardness, humor and surprise in human experience.”  Canary created a website for Nichole’s company with subtle design elements that give a nod to the whimsy in her work, while keeping the images of her dance pieces and the latest news front and center.

Future of Music Coalition: FMC is a national nonprofit organization with a mission close to our hearts, being a company co-founded by two musicians.  FMC works to ensure a diverse musical culture where artists flourish, are compensated fairly for their work, and where fans can find the music they want. The site is built on a highly customized Drupal backend to allow FMC to manage a vast database of articles, research, news and more, and also incorporates CiviCRM which allows FMC to handle event registrations, contributions and donations, and to manage and send messages to their email lists.

ARS Nova Workshop: This Philadelphia-based nonprofit jazz and experimental music presenting organization regularly presents some of our favorite musicians, so we were thrilled to create a new site to showcase their excellent programming. The site features a customized Drupal content management system, and features an events calendar, streaming audio from each artist, an archive of past performances, and more.

Promotion

On the promotion side, we’re always busy with new festival, exhibitions, and performances.  Here's a quick list of some current and upcoming events. Visit each client's electronic press kit pages on our site for more details.

Philagrafika 2010 (now – April 11, 2010) is the inaugural presentation of the Philadelphia-wide international festival that celebrates the role of print as a vital force in contemporary art. Philagrafika 2010 showcases the work of more than 300 artists and unites 88 Philadelphia art institutions, including Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Moore College of Art & Design, The Print Center, and Temple Gallery, Tyler School of Art, Temple University.  Media coverage includes major features and/or reviews from The New York Times, Art in America, The Philadelphia Inquirer, National Public Radio, WHYY, ABC-6, NBC-10, Metro Philadelphia, Philadelphia City Paper, Philadelphia Weekly, Artnet.com, and TheArtBlog.org, just to name a few. There’s still plenty of time to see the amazing work in this festival, which runs through April 11!

Philadelphia Dance Projects Presents 2010 kicks off this month on February 20, with performances through March 13.  The 2nd year of the successful series celebrates local dance with a look back and a look ahead. PDP’s Local Dance History Project will provide an informative look at the rise of contemporary dance by showcasing the work of five dance and movement artists who were among the first to explore post modern, improvisation and performance genres in the city during the late 1970s and early 80s. The series will also present new work from a younger generation of artists who are widening the definition of contemporary dance.

The Rosenbach Museum & Library presents For Ruthie (Feb 10 – June 21, 2010), a one-of-a-kind exhibition that explores the collaboration between world-renowned author and illustrator Maurice Sendak and Caldecott Honor-winning children’s book author Ruth Krauss. Throughout March, the Rosenbach will celebrate another beloved book, Alice in Wonderland, and the forthcoming release of the major motion picture, from Walt Disney Pictures and visionary director Tim Burton.  The museum will offer several Lewis Carroll inspired programs and events, from the exhibition Moore Adventures in Wonderland (now – June 6), Gallery Talks and Hands-On Tours, to A Mad Tea Party (March 3). Also at the Rosenbach, Friend or Faux: Imitation and Invention from Innocent to Fraudulent (now – July 11, 2010), explores the attractions and pitfalls of authenticity.

Philadelphia Young Playwrights (PYP):  The work of Philadelphia area student playwrights will be brought to life on the stage of the Suzanne Roberts Theatre during PYP’s 2010 Professional Productions, from March 2 – 5.  Fully staged professional productions of winning student plays will be performed by professional actors and directed by David Bradley.  On March 4, PYP will celebrate past and present young voices with the 2010 Write On! A Celebration of Student Voices gala, which will feature a cocktail reception, awards ceremony, and the professional productions performances.

The Wilma Theater:  Following a critically acclaimed and wildly successful, extended run of Becky Shaw, The Wilma Theater grapples with the problems of democracy in the 21st century in the two plays that continue its 2009 - 2010 season, the World Premiere of Yussef El Guindi’s Language Rooms (March 3 – April 4, 2010) and the U.S. Premiere of Leaving, Václav Havel’s first new play in 20 years, translated by Paul Wilson (May 19 – June 20, 2010).
