Mauckingbird Theater Company
presents the Philadelphia Premiere of
Hedda Gabler

by Henrik Ibsen
a new adaptation by Caroline Kava
directed by Peter Reynolds

Is it impossible to believe that a young woman would just want to peek inside a world that she is forbidden to know anything about?

– Hedda Gabler

After the success of their inaugural season with all-male versions of The Misanthrope and Shakespeare's R & J, Mauckingbird Theatre Company presents Hedda Gabler as a compelling lesbian drama with the Philadelphia Premiere of Caroline Kava’s explosive new adaptation of Ibsen’s classic. Rising scholar George Tesman, played by Dito van Reigersberg (star of last year’s The Misanthrope), has just married the beautiful, dangerously intelligent and much desired Hedda Gabler (Jennie Eisenhower). The newlyweds’ lives are thrown into disarray and their livelihood is threatened with the unexpected return of Miss Eilert Lovborg (Sarah Sanford), Tesman’s rival and Hedda’s true love. Hedda becomes consumed with jealousy as she watches Lovborg live her life with abandon, dressing in men’s clothes and openly seeing other women. Dissatisfied with conventional life and trapped in a marriage that she desperately wants to escape, Hedda wrestles with her own desires while manipulating those around her in a cruel game.

Mauckingbird Theatre Company was recently profiled in The Philadelphia Inquirer by Toby Zinman. Read the full story online here: An 'R&J' that asks: What's in a gender?
- The Philadelphia Inquirer
"As Philadelphia theater grows, the theater community takes great pride in touting its diversity. Sadly this so-called diversity rarely includes plays geared toward gay audiences... If R&J is anywhere nearly as popular with audiences and critics as The Misanthrope, the little company with the funny name may establish itself as the place to go in Philly for original gay theater."
- Philadelphia Weekly
Mauckingbird's inaugral production of The Misanthrope was recently included in "Top 10" productions of the 2007-08 Theater Season by the Philadelphia Weekly. The Misanthrope also received nods for Best Costume Design by Marie Anne Chiment, and an honorable mention nod in the Best Director category for Peter Reynolds. Review, The Misanthrope: “A very accomplished and very enjoyable Moliere comedy, a Misanthrope of much charm and style. Transposing the foppishness of 17th-century French high society to the fabulosity of the gay club world, director Peter Reynolds makes this all-male production make surprising sense...” Read the full review here, philly.com.
- Philadelphia Inquirer
Review, The Misanthrope: “The Misanthrope will always remain the same. Yet, paradoxically, this is what makes its timeless universality, in the hands of Mauckingbird, work so well in its all-male milieu.” Read the full story here.
- The Weekly Press / UC Review
Review, The Misanthrope: “... The production bristles with bitter humor, timing the wit of each insult so that each character gives as good as he gets, and where the priceless line, 'your uppence has finally come,' could easily apply to all.” Read the full story here.
