ABOUT: In August, a record breaking 80 girls from the Greater Philadelphia region will participate in Girls Rock Philly. The week-long summer day camp for junior rockers ages 9 through 17 is staffed by female volunteers dedicated to teaching girls how to rock out while building self-esteem through music education.
Girls Rock Philly’s camp week (August 9 – 13) will culminate with a public showcase on Saturday, August 14 at 1pm. For the very first time, the campers will have the opportunity to take their skills to a professional music venue, the Trocadero Theatre, for their final camp performance, which allows the newly-formed camper bands to perform their original material in front of a live audience.
A non-profit organization presenting Philadelphia’s only rock camp for girls serving the Greater Philadelphia region, Girls Rock Philly (GRP) provides girls with a chance to unleash their inner rock stars and to learn songwriting, guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, DJ’ing and vocals. Campers form bands and write their own songs, create their own band merchandise, attend diverse workshops, discover women in rock history and finesse their on-stage jump kicks in addition to recording in WXPN’s professional World Café Performing Studio, generously donated by the radio station.
30 of the 80 campers are returning this year, and fifty percent of campers received scholarships or financial aid to attend camp week.
During camp week, GRP will be live-blogging to http://girlsrockphilly.tumblr.com/ with music, videos, and photos of the all-female campers and volunteers rocking out.
