PHILADELPHIA – Girls Rock Philly (GRP) is proud to announce the second year of Ladies Rock Camp, a weekend-long day camp and fundraising event held February 19 – 21, 2011, on the campus of Freire Charter School (2027 Chestnut Street) in Philadelphia. Each $400 camp tuition fee will fund one girl’s scholarship to attend the Girls Rock Philly Summer Day Camp in 2011, Philly’s only rock camp for girls ages 9 to 17.
“Ladies Rock Camp is a great way to indulge a lifelong fantasy while providing financial aid to young girls who will attend our summer camp,” says Girls Rock Philly Director, Beth Warshaw-Duncan. “It’s never too late to channel your inner rock star.”
There is no experience necessary to apply, and applications are available online at www.girlsrockphilly.org.
Ladies Rock Camp is open to women ages 19 and up who are ready to rock out to get the full rock camp experience. Lady rock stars will have the opportunity to learn a new instrument, improve existing skills, collaborate, write songs, attend music workshops and network with other women musicians. Campers will start a band and perform in the end of camp performance to showcase their rock ‘n’ roll skills. Throughout the weekend, the camp will also feature workshops with topics related to being a lady rocker in addition to providing an opportunity for participants to network with other women musicians in their area.
Ladies Rock Camp founding organizer Andrea Kuhar says, “The camp is geared toward women who have never been in a band, who want to rock out on a new instrument, or return to their guitars that have been long-banished to the back of the closet, and do so in the most rocking all-female environment in Philly.”
About Girls Rock Philly (GRP): Girls Rock Philly is a music and mentoring 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering girls and women from the greater Philadelphia region through music education and activities that foster self-respect, leadership skills, creativity, self-expression, critical thinking, and collaboration.
GRP presents Philadelphia’s first and only rock camp exclusively for girls. The week-long summer day camp serves junior rockers ages 9 to 17. The organization saw record-breaking interest for their 2010 camp, held in August, as the camp expanded to serve 75 junior rockers in its fourth year. Led by a team of all female instructors and band coaches, girls in the program learn how to play musical instruments, write songs, make their own band merchandise, discover other women in rock and finesse their on-stage jump kicks.
GRP is a founding member of the Girls Rock Camp Alliance. There are currently 40 Girls Rock Camps across the world, including 25 in the U.S.
