WHAT: On Saturday, September 25, Philadelphia’s Rosenbach Museum & Library opens its doors, offering free admission for visitors to the museum’s Open House from Noon – 6 p.m. Part of Smithsonian Museum Day – an annual event in which participating museums across the country open their doors for free – museumgoers are invited to explore the historic Rosenbach brothers’ home at their leisure, an option available only one day of the year, in addition to the museum’s current exhibitions and galleries. Museum staff members and docents will be available throughout the day to guide visitors and answer questions about the collection.
During the Open House, visitors are invited to experience:
- Historic 2010 Delancey: The Rosenbach Home – On the National Register of Historic Places, 2010 Delancey was home to renowned art and book dealers, Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach and his brother, Philip. Their parlor and dining room feature portraits by Thomas Sully and Gilbert Stuart as well as furniture by Anthony Quervelle. Dr. Rosenbach’s spectacular personal library is a highlight of any trip to the Rosenbach.
- Marianne Moore’s Greenwich Village living room –The modernist poet left her papers and the contents of her living room to the Rosenbach, creating a poetry landmark.
- Exhibition Galleries – Special exhibitions show off the depth and breadth of the Rosenbach collection. Two exhibitions currently on view include:
- Dreadful Things Happen: The Brothers Grimm and Maurice Sendak (thru November 7, 2010) examines illustrator Maurice Sendak’s perspective on the folktales popularized by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.
- Westward Ho! The Lure and Lore of the American West (thru November 28, 2010), featuring dime novels, photographs, guides, maps and more
The Rosenbach Museum & Library seeks to inspire curiosity, inquiry, and creativity by engaging broad audiences in exhibitions, programs, and research based on its remarkable and expanding collections. The museum was founded by legendary book dealer A.S.W. Rosenbach and his brother and business partner Philip. With an outstanding collection of rare books, manuscripts, furniture, and art, the Rosenbach is a museum and world-renowned research library, set within two historic 1865 townhouses, that reflects an age when great collectors lived among their treasures.
Located at 2008-2010 Delancey Place, the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday. The Saturday, September 25 Open House offers free admission. Regular museum admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and groups of 10 or more, $5 for students and children ages 5-18, and free for children under 5.
