Canary in Harrisburg for the Launch of Pennsylvania’s Top 10 Endangered Artifacts
It’s official: We’re all addicted to clicking refresh on the Pennsylvania’s Top 10 Endangered Artifacts site to count the votes, shares and donations that have been pouring in since Thursday’s campaign launch in Harrisburg, PA. As of this posting, 400,000 votes have been registered on the site, and the campaign has only just begun.
PA’s Top 10 Endangered Artifacts is a six-week social media and crowdfunding campaign created by the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts to raise awareness and support for the conservation of 10 historic treasures from across the state. We were honored to unveil the identity of these fascinating objects and their caretaker organizations in the Commonwealth’s capital city, and to share the stories they tell about our history with the press and the public.
Harrisburg’s handsome Governor’s Residence, steeped in history and heritage, was a perfect setting for the selected artifacts’ big reveal. Mrs. Susan Corbett, the First Lady of Pennsylvania, graciously welcomed the visitors to her home and lent words of support to the campaign. Within moments of the site’s launch, vote counts began building in support of the historic objects on the Top 10 list, including a 15th-century Mennonite Bible, a film archive of African-American life in Pittsburgh, 18th-century butterfly specimens and a wig worn by a congressman instrumental in abolishing slavery.
The campaign is just beginning, so let your voice be heard! You can see all 10 artifacts; learn more about the institutions that preserve them; check on the front-runner for the People’s Choice awards; and, most importantly, vote, share and donate at PATop10Artifacts.org. Voting ends at midnight on November 1.
