Congratulations to the 2012 Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia winners!
Last night at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the winners of the 2012 Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia got a proper fête — complete with award presentation, special declaration by Mayor Michael Nutter and a Shakespearean Random Act of Culture — and we’re proud to have been part of the celebration. (Click here to see photos from the big event.)
Emerging from more than 1,260 submissions to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, this year’s winners — 35 in total — represent a wide range of Philly’s most creative thinkers, from small organizations like the Bearded Ladies Cabaret and Little Berlin to individuals like Sean Stoops and Erica Hawthorne. To date, 71 ideas have been awarded a total of $5.4 million; a third round of the Challenge will open in the fall. We’re honored to continue working on this project.
The 2012 winners include many Canary clients past and present:
- The Asian Arts Initiative, creating site-specific works for unexpected places like restaurants, storefronts and public plazas;
- The Wilma Theater, providing advanced training for local actors through a series of master classes;
- Swim Pony Performing Arts, weaving the arts into the community by presenting original, contemporary plays in nontraditional spaces like Eastern State Penitentiary and the Academy of Natural Sciences;
- University of the Arts, promoting economic stability for the city’s cultural community by offering support to emerging creative businesses via pre-seed funding, mentorship programs and workshops.
