Young Voices High School Monologue Festival On Stage at The Adrienne Theater This Week
The 2011 Young Voices High School Monologue Festival kicks off today! Presented by Philadelphia Young Playwrights and InterAct Theatre Company, the 4-day Festival offers staged performances of winning student-penned monologues, performed by professional actors from Philadelphia’s theatre community. Performances open to the public will be held on Thursday, February 17 at 7pm and Saturday, February 19 at 2pm at The Adrienne Theater.
Monologue playwright and student blogger Glenna Walsh has been actively documenting her experiences in the Festival at the Young Voices blog. Glenna goes behind the scenes of the competition, from an inside-look at the writing process of her monologue Predisposition, to what its like to work with actors and more.
In a blog post about The First Rehearsal, Glenna amusingly writes: “When you enter the world of theater, you find that it comes with its own colorful vocabulary. No where else will you come across words like ‘dramaturg,’ which (I don’t know about you, but) to me sounds like some sort of sage living in the woods with a coffee supply as infinite as his wisdom, bent over an unending pile of monologues with a red-inked quill.”
Glenna is an 11th grader at Neumann-Goretti in South Philly. Her experience in the Festival is one of many inspiring stories at play. This year’s winners represent some of the area’s best young playwriting talent. Fifteen original monologues will be performed in total. Students created stories about family, relationships, race and culture, independence, bullying and violence, identity and more. Content and language is mature and appropriate for high school audiences.
